Corte del Calderer, San Polo.
This corte is named after the "caldereri" or "calderai," manufacturers
of cauldrons and copper pots who
got organized in 1294 under the protection of S. Giovanni Decollato.
Their meeting place was the church of San Luca in San Marco.
Calle del Calderer, off Fondamenta de la Misericordia in Cannaregio, is also named after them.
Corte del Calderer is one of the few remaining places in Venice where we can still admire the old
herringbone brick design.

On March 29 the Jewish Ghetto turns 500 and Venice is planning a big commemoration
to honor Jewish culture and traditions with an exhibition (Venice, the Jews and Europe. 1516-2016)
at the Doge's Palace (from June 19th to November 13th) and a production of The Merchant of Venice
for the first time in the ghetto itself (July 26-31) among other events.
To mark the occasion, the New York Times recently published an apropos article on
the Jewish Ghetto of Venice.

"A Beautiful Woman in Venice" is the new title from author Kathleen González
who has previously given us "Free Gondola Ride" and "Seductive Venice."
This very well researched book fills a big void in the telling of Venetian history: the pivotal,
but often ignored, role that Venetian women played in the making of the Republic.
Prolific writers, daring poets, talented musicians, pioneer glassmakers,  passionate denouncers, all
find a voice in  Kathleen González's engaging writing. Do not be mislead by the title. This is not
a book about courtesans –although there is a chapter on the most famous of all, Veronica Franco.
It's a book about ordinary women and their extraordinary achievements in a time when they had no voice,
no power. In Mrs. Gonzalez's own words: "Beauty comes in countless guises and packages. I won't
attempt to define it, though I hope that the stories of these beautiful Venetian women will
illuminate the term and help us all redefine beauty."
