Gallerie de l'Accademia, Scuola de la Carità, Dorsoduro.
Portal with an inscription describing the consequences of the earthquake of January 25, 1348, –1347 in the Venetian calendar (known as the Friuli earthquake).
According to the inscription, the tremors lasted forty days and destroyed the church of San Baseio and fell many bell towers and chimneys. It was followed by the outbreak of an illness (the Great Plague) that killed many people and made them fearful because they suspected it was passed from the sick to the rest. People spat blood. Fathers did not want to visit their sons and sons did not want to visit their fathers. Three hundred members of the scuola died, among them the guardian Piero Trevisan, from Barbaria (de le Tole), and ten of his companions. The pestilence lasted six months. That year the Pope (Clement VI) absolved of their sins those who perished from the illness.

Complesso dell'Ospedaletto. The hospice was erected in 1528 to assist and house the people of the Veneto

Orphan girls were given a musical education
while the boys were taught a trade.

Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti.
The construction of the church began in 1574.

Music room, built  between 1776 and 1777.

The gratings in the front of the room are a tromp l'oeil; the ones on the back wall are real.

Giuseppe Sardi's elliptic staircase (1664-1666). A masterpiece of engineering; note that the staircase has

Hands on the Grand Canal.
"Support" the work of artist Lorenzo Quinn (son of actor Anthony Quinn) was on display
in Venice's Ca' Sagredo at Santa Sofia until a couple of weeks ago. Venice could be submerged into several feet of
water by the end of the century if the sea level keeps rising. Quinn's monumental hands lent much needed support
to a cause that we hope is not lost.
