These two
representations of the Madonna della Misericordia are carved at eye
level on the columns of the building where the plaque with Madonna # 3
(Merceria de l'Orologio) is located. The whole building used to belong
to the Scuola della
Misericordia. San Marco 214A.
On the column at the south
corner of the building there is a beautiful
relief in Istrian stone that shows the Madonna protecting three
worshipers on
each side. Two
angels help her hold her mantle. The emblem of Santa Maria Valverde,
another name for Santa Maria della Misericordia, can be seen on the
other side of the column.
At the north end of the building there is another relief also at eye level that is not as well preserved. How
to get there. Go
under the clock tower (Torre de l'Orologio) on Piazza San
Marco. The street is called Merceria (or Marzaria) de l'Orologio. The
first intersection to the left is Calle dei Baloni. These are in
the same building where #3 is located. Thanks to Annie from Churches in
Venice for alerting me about this Madonna and sharing her pictures and
to Philippe from Paris for locating the precise spot.
