The frescoes were rediscovered by accident during a restoration in 1990-1996. They had been covered with lime
during an outbreak of the plague.
Parangon or Paragone makes reference to the silk cloth of outstanding quality (standard of excellence)
that was produced in an adjacent building during the 16th and 17th centuries.
