Porch of the church  of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, Dorsoduro. The porch was a common feature in old churches. Today two remain in Venice: here and at San Giacometto di Rialto. The porch was used as a gathering place for prayer by the "pinzocchere," tertiary women associated with the church. It was also a cemetery until the 16th century.
