Palazzo Rizzo-Patarol, today the beautiful Hotel Boscolo dei Dogi, on Fondamenta de la Madonna de l'Orto, Cannaregio.
The garden was the labor of love of Lorenzo Patarol who imported exotic species, especially roses and jasmines, from all over the world and created one of the most unusual botanical gardens of Europe. At the start of the 19th century, Giovanni Correr replaced many of the exotic plants and opened the space with winding paths and even a little bridge. The garden has been restored to its original glory by the Boscolo family at the beginning of this century. An underground icehouse, a Venetian rarity, hides in the middle of the garden as a grotto. It was used for food storage during the summer months. The mystery picture is of the Palladian loggia at the end of the garden from which a great view of the lagoon can be enjoyed.
